Position Title: Counsellor

Nature & Scope:

The post holder will engage in therapeutic relationships with clients 18 and over affected by addiction. The post holder will work with other members of the clinical team to provide a person-centred care service.


Location: Balbriggan

Work Schedule: 35 hours per week.

Contract: Permanent

Salary: €42,334 - €56,182 Depending on Experience


Reporting to: The post holder will be responsible to Crosscare Counselling Service Manager or nominated Deputy.


The Role

  • Provide individual counselling to persons over 18 years of age.

  • Managing a caseload of clients under the supervision of the line manager.

  • Understand and prioritise client’s needs, taking account of the influence of family, mental health, peer group, gender, culture and sexuality on beliefs and behaviors.

  • Conduct comprehensive assessment of the presenting issues of the client and concerned persons where appropriate.

  • Development and maintenance of clinical partnerships with professionals working in same or other treatment modalities and settings.

  • Notification of child protection concerns in accordance with “Children First” Guidelines in consultation with Crosscare Designated Liaison Person.

  • To monitor and evaluate effectiveness and outcomes of treatment for individuals/groups, matching therapy to needs.

  • Discharge and onward referral when appropriate.

  • Referral of clients to self-help groups and community initiatives.

  • Flexibility in practice as required i.e. out of hours, provision of new programs and service initiatives

Data collection and Administration:

  • Use the admin systems for data collection and recording.

  • Networking with local projects within the community and developing referral pathways.

  • Working as part of Crosscare engaging in team meetings, supervision, reviews and planning sessions

  • Maintaining Crosscare confidentiality at all times and adhering to data protection legislation requirements and policies and procedures

  • Promoting positive working relationships with other Crosscare services and external organisations

Essential Requirements:

The candidate must, at the latest date for receipt of completed application forms for the post, possess:

Professional Qualification in Counselling/Psychotherapy of at least 2yrs Diploma Standard AND · Accreditation with relevant Professional Body within ACI (previously IAAAC) or IACP, IHIP or other AND · A minimum of two years' experience of managing a case load under supervision, after achieving professional qualification.

  • Demonstrate commitment to ongoing evaluation of supervision and clinical practice to ensure a quality and effective service.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of notification procedures around child protection and management of other ethical considerations relevant to post.

  • Demonstrate an ability to engage in health promotion and education work.

  • Demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development and effective use of supervision

  • Demonstrate an ability to work both as part of a multidisciplinary team and to work independently, under Supervision.
